The Role Of Governors
All schools have a Governing Body to ensure that it has the capacity to improve and raise overall standards.
Some governors represent the Local Authority, some represent staff, and some are parents of children at the school elected by other parents.
Other governors are from our community who may have business or other skills; often just by asking straightforward critical questions of the school on behalf of the community the government has an opportunity to reflect on how we meet the needs of the community.
OFSTED considers the governing body to be part of the leadership and management of the school. However governors do not manage the school. That is the job of the Headteacher and Leadership and Management teams. Governors are there to be “a critical friend” to the Headteacher and the school.
The full Governing Body meets termly. It is not practical for the full governing body to make decisions on every aspect of its business. There are, therefore, two committees which have specific areas of work delegated to them, which are curriculum and resources. The committee members report back to the full governing body for ratification of their decisions.
The Governors role:
- Receiving information about the school’s performance and comparing it with past performance, national averages and ‘similar schools’.
- Ensuring the curriculum for the school promotes the moral, cultural, mental and physical development of all pupils.
- Contributing to the school self-evaluation process.
- Establishing where the school’s strengths and weaknesses are.
- Deciding the priorities for improvement.
- Discussing and approving the school’s targets and timescales.
- Ensuring that the school has a School Development Plan (SDP) that sets out all the actions to be taken.
- Monitoring that implementation of the SDP, mainly by receiving reports from the head teacher.
- Evaluating progress and achievements.
- Deciding the school’s policies on issues including admission and the length of the school day.
- Making sure all pupils have equal opportunities within the school and providing for pupils with special educational needs.
- Ensuring there is a high standard of maintenance of the school’s premises.
- Dealing with complaints about the school.

We had almost 250 signatures on our petition and nearly 200 signed letters to our MP. Governors would like to thank parents for their wonderful efforts. Our Parent Governors Mr Anstee and Mrs Fish delivered parents signed letters and petitions to our MP David Burrowes on Saturday.
